Regal Parrotfish

The eye-catching regal parrotfish with his psychedelic, neon-sign color palette brings day-glo vibes and dreams of when fashion was all about leg warmers, big fluorescent earrings, bright scrunchies and bodysuits. Known as lauia in Hawai‘i, the males of the species are the more dramatic, with their orange or fuschia bodies and markings of bright blues, yellows and greens. All males start as females, however, which are rose-colored with faint light stripes on the belly.

Growing up to 36 centimeters, Lauia are endemic to Hawai‘i, where they can be found inhabiting seaward reefs and feeding on coralline algae with their fused teeth, which give them a permanent, cartoon-like smiley face. They are loud eaters that you can hear crunching underwater, who promote healthy coral reefs by keeping algae in check and making white sand in the process.
